In plain language

What root canal therapy actually is

When the soft tissue inside a tooth becomes infected or inflamed, it causes pain. Root canal therapy removes that infection and seals the tooth.

With modern techniques it's comfortable, much like having a filling, and it lets you keep your natural tooth.

Why saving the tooth matters

An infected tooth won't settle on its own, and the infection can spread. The usual alternative is removing the tooth, but keeping your own tooth is almost always better for your bite and your other teeth.

Ends the pain

Resolves the infection causing the ache.

Saves your natural tooth

Keep your own tooth rather than losing it.

Protects your bite

Avoids the knock-on effects of a missing tooth.

Is this right for you?

You may need it if…

  • You have a persistent or severe toothache
  • A tooth is sensitive to heat that lingers
  • There's swelling or a pimple on the gum
  • A tooth has darkened
  • Deep decay or a crack has reached the nerve
A calm, step-by-step process

How treatment works

1

Settle the pain

We numb the tooth gently and ease the discomfort.

2

Access and clean

We remove the infected tissue from inside.

3

Disinfect

The inside of the tooth is cleaned and shaped.

4

Seal

The canal is filled and sealed against reinfection.

5

Protect

Usually a crown afterwards, to keep the tooth strong.

Honest about what to expect

Recovery & aftercare

The pain you came in with usually eases straight away. The tooth may feel tender for a few days, easily managed with simple pain relief. We usually recommend a crown to protect it long-term.
